Overview

KATSU-TEI Japanese Katsu Restaurant かつ亭 on Lunn Avenue in Mount Wellington offers a refined take on authentic Japanese katsu, nestled within a clean, bright, and inviting space. This Auckland dining spot specializes in various katsu dishes, from tender pork fillet to beef sirloin and chicken, served alongside udon and curry rice options, creating a menu that blends comfort and tradition.

The star here is the katsu itself. The restaurant prides itself on its perfectly crispy, golden panko crust that envelops juicy, tender pork or beef cuts. While some diners have noted occasional dryness in the pork katsu, the overall execution, especially of the fillet and sirloin cuts, impresses with a satisfying balance of texture and flavor. The beef sirloin katsu, in particular, stands out for its rich, juicy bite and well-seasoned crumb.

Beyond the katsu, KATSU-TEI excels in offering hearty and flavorful udon dishes, including miso tofu and spicy variations, which complement the fried mains nicely. The thoughtful inclusion of a kids’ menu, such as the Chicken Katsu Train, broadens its appeal to families seeking a relaxed, casual dining experience.

The atmosphere at the Lunn Avenue location is spacious and comfortable, providing a modern, relaxed Japanese ambiance that caters well to both casual diners and katsu aficionados. The staff contribute to a welcoming vibe, enhancing the overall dining experience with attentive and friendly service.

Located conveniently in a bustling area with ample parking, KATSU-TEI attracts a diverse crowd — from solo diners and couples to families and small groups. It’s a destination for those craving authentic Japanese comfort food presented with care and attention to detail. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty katsu set or a warming bowl of udon, this restaurant blends great flavors with a pleasing setting, making it a worthy stop on Auckland’s vibrant Japanese food scene.

I have tried their Greenlane branch and decided to try this branch, I saw a new meal set, pork fillet (tenderloin) katsu set, it was delicious and the portion was huge, just eyeballing it, I think it must be over 200g, this set was about $22, just a few dollars more than the sirloin, which is still the best value pork katsu set that is under $20. The panko was crispy and golden, the pork was so tender and not dry, very enjoyable and will be back again!

Daruma ramen no more and replaced with Katsu-Tei. I ordered pork Katsu the first time when I visited and the pork was a bit dry. Another establishment does better pork Katsu. Which was a bit of a let down. But the 2nd time visiting I ordered the Gyu sirloin steak Katsu and to my surprise it was done beautifully! Wife had the chicken Katsu with egg on hot plate. The Katsu itself was great but there was a burnt taste with the egg. Perhaps overcooked with the sauce on the sizzling plate? Not sure. Overall it's a good experience and will visit again.

Potok’s katsu fillet is pretty good — the fried skin is light and crispy, quite similar to the Japanese-style tonkatsu. The pork itself is tender, but it feels a little over-fried and slightly dry, which is a bit of a pity. The miso pork katsu has a nice flavour, though the sauce leans a little on the salty side for my taste. The dining area is bright, spacious, and very clean, giving off a comfortable and relaxing vibe. The prices are also reasonable for the portion and quality. If the katsu could be cooked just a touch less so it stays juicier inside, it would be close to perfect.

Absolutely love this place! The food’s amazing, the space is roomy, and the vibes are just right. Their pork katsu? Perfectly crunchy with just the right crumb thickness! Don’t skip the desserts either, they’re delish! Plus, the staff are super pleasant. Definitely coming back!

It has parking in front, amongst several other restaurant choices. At 5pm on a Friday, it happens to have more people inside than Nando’s and a Thai alternative nearby. It’s not spacious but clean. I have a single table for 2, but close to another table. The Asahi zero was good, my miso soup was reasonable, and the Beef Tataki looks excellent and tastes amazing: the sauce has a touch of vinegar and brings out a beautiful mix of sour and umami tastes. It’s in the sashimi session, if you don’t like it raw, then try the Prime Beef. I also ordered grilled beef tongues and pork belly (yes, I am a reckless foodie), but they didn’t wow me. Overall, a great experience and worthy of a return visit

New kid on the block. Sister restaurant from Japan and the quality doesn't disappoint. Pork Katsu set was very nice with tender pork and fragrant rice. The price was very good as well at under $20 for a pretty good size set. Chicken katsu egg don was very nice with good flavours and good amount of eggs. Plenty of choices on the menu to choose from, we want to try the curry don next time.

Food was delicious. We ordered the: - pork miso udon - tofu miso udon - egg plant - chips - matcha ice cream dessert Atmosphere is lovely until it gets a crowded, the open space and way it’s designed becomes a noisy when crowded Service was alright, staff who took our order struggled with the menu - when ordering miso udon they said it wasn’t an option (despite being on the menu). We got the order through in the end and the option for miso udon was, indeed, available.
